How to run a punch list that actually closes the job

  1. Walk it with the owner. Room by room, in the same order every time, so nothing is skipped and nothing is argued about later.
  2. One item, one line. Say what is wrong and where: "outlet cover missing, kitchen island, left side" beats "electrical".
  3. Give every line an owner and a date. An item that belongs to nobody is the one still open in a month.
  4. Sign items off as they are done. The cleared list, signed, is what lets you send the final invoice without a debate.

The punch list closes the job. The margin is decided before.

Tavro does not manage punch lists. What it does: show you, during the job, whether hours and expenses are eating your margin, from the quote to the last timesheet, with scheduling and site photos in the same place.

Frequently asked questions

What is a punch list in construction?

A punch list is the list of items still to fix or finish before a job is considered complete: a paint touch-up, a missing outlet cover, a door that sticks. It is usually written during a walkthrough with the owner near the end of the job, and each item is signed off once it is done.

What should a punch list include?

For each item: a clear description, where it is (room, floor, elevation), who is responsible (trade or crew), a target date and a status. At the top: the project, the address, the date of the walkthrough and who took part. Vague items such as "fix paint" are the ones that come back.

Who creates the punch list?

Usually the general contractor or the project manager, during a walkthrough with the owner or the architect. Subcontractors get the items that concern their trade, and the owner signs off when the list is cleared.

Can I use this punch list template in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Fill it in here and use "Download for Excel": you get a CSV file that opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. You can also print it or save it as a PDF from the print window. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
